Prix Voltaire de la Photographie
“Exhibiting at Voltaire’s house is particularly special for me because we live in a time where freedom of expression is once again under threat. The old, exacerbated powers continue to attack freedom and secularism, albeit by new means. If we chase them out the door, they come back in through the keyhole. The fight is endless, and Voltaire reminds us that the crusade against fanaticism, religious sectarianism, the pursuit of justice against irrationality, must continue now more than ever.
Voltaire is also all about the creation of oneself, an approach that I equally initiated early in my life, and Self-Reflections is a photographic mise-en-scène of this reflection; four distinct personalities within the same person. To think freely, to shock sometimes, to satirize, to laugh at everything, even when it’s not the popular thing to do, and can put us in danger. As an artist, it’s my right as well as my duty to laugh at everything.” — Nuno Roque
